Mounjaro for Weight Loss: What You Need to Know — and How to Make It Work for You
In the evolving world of metabolic health and weight loss support, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is creating quite a stir. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, it's now being prescribed “off-label” for weight loss — with promising results.
But as with any medication, Mounjaro is just one piece of the puzzle. Real, long-term success comes from pairing medication with the right lifestyle, mindset, and personalised support.
At EverWell, I’m here to walk alongside you with medical insight, coaching tools, and holistic guidance tailored to women — especially those navigating hormonal change, perimenopause, and midlife metabolism.
Let’s break it down.
What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable medication. It was originally licensed for type 2 diabetes but has gained attention for its significant impact on weight loss — even in people without diabetes.
Unlike other GLP-1 medications like Ozempic (semaglutide), tirzepatide acts on two gut hormones:
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1)
GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide)
This dual action makes it potentially more powerful in reducing appetite, improving insulin sensitivity, and supporting metabolic health.
How Does Mounjaro Work?
Tirzepatide mimics the natural hormones that are released after eating. It works to:
~ Reduce appetite and cravings
~ Slow gastric emptying, so you feel full longer
~ Improve insulin response and blood sugar regulation
~ Act on brain centres linked to hunger and reward
This makes it easier to consume fewer calories without extreme restriction, and to support weight loss over time — especially when paired with healthy habits.
What You Still Need to Do While Taking Mounjaro
It’s important to remember: weight loss injections aren’t magic wands. They can help shift the needle, but sustainable change needs more than a weekly dose.
Here’s what else supports long-term success:
1. Prioritise Nutrition
You may be eating less — but the quality of what you eat still matters.
Focus on:
High-protein meals to preserve lean muscle
Fibre-rich foods to support digestion and gut health
Whole, nutrient-dense ingredients to nourish your body
Hydration and mindful eating also matter more than ever.
2. Stay Active — Especially with Strength Training
Mounjaro may cause fat and muscle loss. To protect your strength and metabolism, build in:
Resistance training 2–3x per week
Daily movement (walks, stretching, functional exercise)
Core stability and posture work (especially for women in perimenopause)
3. Support Mindset, Motivation & Habit Change
Weight loss is emotional — and tied to identity, confidence, and old stories. Coaching can help you:
Unpick unhelpful patterns around food and body
Build self-trust and sustainable routines
Stay grounded through changes in appetite, mood, or energy
You’re not “failing” if it still feels hard — behaviour change takes support.
What About HRT & Hormonal Contraception?
If you’re taking HRT or the contraceptive pill, here’s what you need to know:
1. Delayed Absorption of Oral Medications
Like other GLP-1/GIP drugs, Mounjaro slows gastric emptying, which may alter the absorption of oral medications — including oral contraceptives or HRT tablets.
Recommendation: Consider non-oral forms of contraception or HRT (patches, IUD, vaginal rings, etc.), especially if you've recently started Mounjaro or notice hormonal symptoms changing.
2. Monitor Hormonal Balance
Weight loss, changing body fat %, and altered metabolism can affect how you respond to oestrogen and progesterone therapy. You may need to adjust your HRT dose or delivery route with support from your prescriber.
3. Increased Fertility Risk
Women with PCOS or irregular cycles may find that weight loss on Mounjaro restarts ovulation — increasing the chance of pregnancy. So if you’re relying on hormonal birth control, be extra mindful.
